To Feed Or Not To Feed....    That is the Question.

A Lot of thoughts swirl 'round my head when I ponder this subject. For the most part, I think it's a bad idea to do it around your house. I've heard of some cases where it's really back-fired for folks. Once you start, you can't just walk away without setting yourself up to see "a whole 'nother side" of the big guys. If you've never been in a deep sleep and had something slam your house multiple times at 4:00am then it might be hard to imagine just how terrifying that experience can be. Especially since you don't know what's coming next... Are they going to burst through the door? Smash through a window? Your mind races.

I've seen these things, the very LAST thing I want to do is piss one off. Or worse, how about having multiple ones ticked off at you? Like that young Alabama family? Their home was surrounded, the Big Guys  were smacking the house from different places... Showing themselves. What a nightmare! Thank God they had family to call on, who came and rescued them.

I do think if you have BF's around your property, and you want to gift them with the occasional treat, or present, that's cool. Just don't do it up close to your house. Establish an area, some walking distance away, out of sight, where they can feel comfortable approaching, and you can too!

My gifting area is at least 250 feet away....and was pre-established for me. Some of the things I have left for them:  carved animal figures, brightly colored polished rocks and crystals, squeaky toys, bones, necklaces, stuffed animals, a mirror, feathers, and fruit. I had three green plastic frogs that I placed down on the berm. One of them, that sat at the top of the pond, rarely got messed with. One that was set on a little bird house would disappear for days, then I'd find it at the base of the huge oak tree. I'd put it back on the birdhouse and it would disappear again. The third frog was in the gifting area. And it got the most activity. All three eventually disappeared.

Picture
Typical things in my gifting area.
For days at a time, nothing would be messed with, then I'd notice something funny, the frog would be in exactly the same place, but it would be turned a quarter turn. If it had been facing the trail west, it would be facing south. Example below.
Multiple times, I would photograph the area, put the frog facing the trail again, and then come back the next day, and it would be turned a quarter turn in the opposite direction, or facing backwards, And that's the kind of thing they do....They are so subtle! It makes you wonder if you're going nuts. But it is exciting when it happens, because they are interacting with you.

After living here for four years, I can absolutely understand why most people don't think these things are around their property.  If you are not paying REALLY close attention, you will miss the subtle ways they let you know they have been there.

I do still put food gifts out, since it was a previously established practice at this location. I can tell you that this has been the year of Peanut Butter. The previous years they have been totally uninterested in it, but in the past 4 weeks, 11 jars have disappeared. (It would be more if I didn't keep running out!)

I hope they appreciate that I gave them some of the good 'heart healthy' stuff!

Next entry I'll share about the time I got two gifts at once!

What an awesome article and subject . Baiting .... so very cool what you are and have experienced . I agree 100 percent about being prepared for the end result of baiting .close proximity to your house and not knowing what these creatures are capable of might sway a person away from it . being basically escorted out of the woods after a deer hunt and also a boar hunt makes a person re think whether or not you want to get that close to them , But my fascination with them and my hunting instinct overshadows the fear of actually someday being close to one . ill never harm one unless its a life or death situation which brings up the subject of should I invade there space to the point of having to defend my life ?? I have actually started baiting in an area where I had an encounter many years ago and just recently found sign to justify my baiting now. my main experience with baiting in wildlife if from wild boar. trial and error over several years gave me the knowledge to now be able to bring them in very soon after baiting an area . the area I'm in has pockets of boar and it is amazing to finally hit that sweet spot of what they seek and what triggers them to feed. I believe a BF could very well be attracted to or pushed away from an area depending on the bait and also the amount of time you linger in an area during baiting . comparing them to boar is ridiculous as far as intelligence goes but the urge for an animal to seek out a food source that gives them the nutrients to survive is how I'm comparing them . some animals seek out protein and can sense it after the first taste , that was my experience with boar. commonly available product at the local feed store brought them in in a feeding frenzy, but the wind had to be right .then my second choice way hard sasafrass candy . they would pass up everything else to get to it . The BF with there senses above my comprehension might have that bait or baits they truly love or seek out . its not textbook for sure ,but your article is Amazing and I had to respond with my thoughts . This is the excitement and fascination that now that I have time to get back in the woods that makes this research so amazing and having your blog to read and share thoughts is very cool !! I had my encounter with a creature when I was 14 along with others in that same area during a 2 to 3 month span, we simply called it the Valley Monster but that's another story .... Thank you for this blog and Thank you for the opportunity to interact !! Keep up you Awesome work !!!

Thanks for your comment T.J.

And I think it's a really fine line between 'Gifting" and Baiting. I think it depends on what your intention is. Thanks for bringing this up!

Here at the casa.... It really is a gifting thing. I'm not trying to bring them in. I already know they are here. I'm not trying to video them anymore. (We tried that, and I'll share that experience in the blog).

And there is something about the word 'baiting' that bothers me in regards to these beings. I know hunters bait, and you have referenced it that way, being a hunter yourself. Very understandable.

So I don't think of my little food gifts as baiting, because I find the thought of it distasteful. And it isn't my intent to lure them in. My intent is just to sweeten up their life a little, if I can.

Just creating a distinction between the two here.

Thank you again for all the kind words, and for being a "Sketching Encounters" subscriber.

Warmest regards,
Sybilla
